Super Saturdays!!!

Our ward is having it's first ever Super Saturday tomorrow. I am shocked. I thought that this was standard in every ward. But our ward just must be the last to jump on the bandwagon. I love Super Saturdays...always have. But I have never been in charge of one! And now I am starting to see why Enrichment committees are ready to pull their hair out by the end of this so called "early Christmas project making day". Between coming up with ideas, sign up sheets, collecting money, picking up supplies, reminder calls, more reminder calls and putting together a lunch and goodies for all of the ladies...it is enough to drive you a little crazy! I have also been bitten a bit by the nesting bug and have been cleaning like crazy. Not a good idea to have combined that with the Super Saturday craziness! Anyway...the reason I post is because the class that I am in charge of actually came about from one of the Mother's day gifts I gave my Mom this year. It is super easy...inexpensive and sure to bring tears to their eyes. And since Christmas is coming and it is that time of year where you are scratching your head wondering what to give someone who is impossible to shop for (minus the men...Josh said he wouldn't be that excited about receiving these as a gift-although I have no idea why!?!!) here is an idea and the instructions to go with it. Like I said...completely easy to do! They are picture coasters. You pick up tiles at your local hardware store, use Mod Podge, and some Triple Thick clear glaze, and you are set. I will even fill you in on a few tricks I learned from doing mine!

INSTRUCTIONS:

*You can use any sized tile for this project...you don't even have to make coasters. I have seen adorable family pics done on 12x12 tiles and then put on iron easels too. The coasters in the picture are a 4x4 size and the photos are 4x6 but cropped to fit onto the tiles. They work better if developed from a lab or if you use good quality photo paper. Printing on regular paper or using poor quality paper causes more bubbles and wrinkles!

You will need:
tiles, photos, Mod Podge, medium size paint soft paint brush, needle or toothpick to pop any air bubbles, and gloss finishing spray.(Small make-up sponge if you also want.)

Brands I use: (picture at the end of the post)
Plaid Mod Podge Matte
Crafts Etc! Triple Thick Clear Glaze (can get from Michaels or Roberts)

1.Clean tile, just get wash cloth and a little bit of water and get any dust off, dry the tile, etc.

2.Dip your paint brush in the Mod Podge, so that 1/2 of the brush is well coated. (Don't use too much at once...it creates more bubbles when you put the picture on!) Brush on tile gently but quickly, working from center out in long strokes. You can go in same direction or not for different effects.Once tile has been coated well- move on to step 3.

3.Get your photo and put a small amount of the Mod Podge on the back, making sure to concentrate on the edges.(You can gently tear the edges of the photo beforehand for a different effect)

4.Place photo where you want on the tile, gently pressing it down, esp the edges. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes. (I just wait until dry to the touch...I am not a patient person!)

5. If you want to do rub on lettering/vinyl lettering-apply now but be careful and make sure that the surface is dry to the touch before rubbing lettering on!

6. Get more Mod Podge on your brush, working from center of photo outward again, etc. Once the entire tile(including photo)has been well covered, this is where you can decide the look of the tile. Long even strokes for a clean look or criss cross, or gently go over with a sponge for a textured look

7. Let dry for at least 24 hours. (or be like me and just wait until dry to the touch!)

8. Repeat step 6.

9. Go outdoors or well ventilated area and go over evenly about 12 inches from tile, with your gloss.

10. Let dry for at least 24-48 hours.

11.Feel free to get creative with your tiles and add extra touches. I added ribbon to mine...you could add any embellishments that you would like (just make sure they are waterproof if you are making coasters...they will get wet!!) Oh, and if you are doing coasters...pick up a package of the felt pads to go on the bottom...the tiles would do a number on a wood surface!!

The main trick for me is to work quickly but gently to avoid the bubbles, if a bubble does occur I try to get it right then and pop it with a needle and go over the area again. Have fun!
